Introducing Lady Beary Hocus... from the Beary Bunch Block Series

There’s something about Halloween that invites a little extra imagination... wonky witch hats, broomsticks, unexpected color combinations, and just enough mischief to make things interesting.

And Lady Beary Hocus is ready for all of it.

Meet Lady Beary Hocus

Spellbinding, mischievous, and ready to stir up a little Halloween fun, Lady Beary Hocus is the first of September’s two new additions to the Beary Bunch Block Series.

Her oversized, wonky witchy hat was one of the details I knew she needed from the beginning. Add the little ribbon around the hat, a broomstick tucked into her hands, and with that sweet face. She feels much more charming than spooky... although I wouldn’t completely rule out a harmless spell or two.

For her expression, I brought back the love bear face from the original Beary Bunch Quilt Pattern, along with the original bear feet. I love being able to pull familiar details from the original bears and mix them with new seasonal elements. She still feels unmistakably Beary Bunch... just dressed up and ready for Halloween.

A Bewitching Color Story

For Lady Beary Hocus, I wanted a Halloween palette that felt a little unexpected while still having those classic witchy touches.

Her bear fabrics are Riley Lilac with Amethyst highlights, giving her that playful purple personality. Her witch hat is Pitch Black, with Cider adding a warm pop to the hat ribbon and broom handle. The broom combines Beehive and Vanilla, while Zucchini fills the background with a wonderfully bold green.

Purple, black, orange, yellow, and green give a nod to traditional Halloween colors, but the particular shades keep the combination bright, playful, and very much at home with the rest of the Beary Bunch.

In the Details

Lady Beary Hocus is traditionally pieced and uses half-rectangle triangles and the stitch and flip method to create her Halloween details.

The wonky angles of her hat were especially fun to evoke those spooky vibes. I wanted it to feel crooked and oversized without losing the clean, graphic look of the Beary Bunch blocks. Her broom adds another bit of character, from the Cider handle down to the Beehive and Vanilla bristles.

The finished block measures 20" x 35", just like the other Beary Pals, so she can be displayed on her own or mixed and matched with other blocks from the series.

A Little More Halloween Mischief Is Coming...

Of course, one Halloween pal couldn’t have all the fun.

Lady Beary Hocus has a frightfully fun companion joining her for September, and he may look a little more monstrous... but I have a feeling he’s mostly interested in the treats.
