Now a little bit about, Miss Farrah...
Miss Farrah the Friendly Witchyboo came to me one night a couple of months ago. The idea for a Halloween witchy ghost just popped into my mind and had to get out onto paper. I grabbed my quilt pattern sketchbook and quickly got out my little idea.
At the time I was preparing for my Flitter Flutter quilt pattern release and wasn't ready to jump into my next planned quilt pattern design. So, a few days later when I was at my local quilt shop picking up my Flitter Flutter quilt from their long-arm service, I couldn’t help but look around at the fabric.
I’ve never been a real fan of Halloween, in all honesty it’s probably my least favorite holiday. But, for some reason I really wanted to make this cute witchy Halloween ghost. While at the quilt shop, I selected an array of fabrics, some traditional halloween and some non-traditional.
I of course went with the non-traditional selection. During that selection process, I couldn’t decide on which background fabric color I wanted, so I purchased both to choose the right one later on.
I also got a few additional supplies for the appliqué; Steam-A-Seam2 and a pair of Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Scissors.
First, I began by tracing Miss Farrah's pieces onto the paper side of the fusible web, Steam-A-Seam2.
Once I had fused a few of the appliqué pieces to my fabric picks, I laid out the larger appliqué pieces to audition the background fabric selections.
With the help of an Instagram vote, I picked the blue for the background fabric as it mimics the night sky.
After deciding on the background color, I finished fusing the smaller appliqué pieces.
Then, before sewing the decorative stitches onto the edges of Miss Farrah's appliqué pieces, I made a sampler piece with test decorative stitches to help pick from.
While testing the decorative stitches, I took notes on the stitches number, width and length, to reference once I was ready.
Next, I wanted to keep the thread colors the same as the fabrics. Surprisingly, I had threads that matched my fabric selections in my stash.
Now, the fun part of sewing the decorative stitches! I started with Miss Farrah's eyes, nose and mouth. It took a little bit of a learning curve to figure out where to pivot to get the stitches all the way around the mouth correctly. Because the stitches needed to overlap each other a little at the pivot points or there would be blank spots.
Note: Using a Tearaway Stabilizer is highly recommended while doing decorative stitches.
YAY! Miss Farrah's decorative stitches are about half way complete.
After all of Miss Farrah's decorative stitches where complete, I began planning out the quilting design.
Of course I couldn't pick an easy quilting design!
I made my quilting sandwich of backing fabric, batting and appliqué quilt top. Then, pin basted about every 4".
First, I stitched in the ditch around all the pieces. Then, I stitched within the pieces and lastly on the background fabric around Miss Farrah.
To finish the quilt, I bound and washed it, to get that lovely crinkled look.
