Oh The Possibilities Quilt... featuring Ruby Star Society 1-800-NOTION
What is it about certain fabric and quilt pattern pairings that makes them feel like they were always meant to find each other... and could this be one of them?
Ruby Star Society's 1-800-Notion collection is beginning to arrive in quilt shops, filled with playful prints inspired by all those familiar little things that surround us while we sew... scissors, spools, buttons, thimbles, seam rippers, and plenty of other quilty goodness.
So when I learned that my quilt pattern, Oh the Possibilities, had been selected as one of the quilt patterns featured with the 1-800-Notion collection, it felt like a pretty perfect match.
After all, what better place for a giant sewing machine than right in the middle of all those notions?
A Little Full-Circle Stitching
Oh the Possibilities actually began with another sewing-inspired fabric collection.
I originally designed the quilt in 2020 for the Tula Pink Homemade Challenge by FreeSpirit Fabrics. After seeing the sewing machine illustrated in one of the Homemade prints, I sat down one evening with a scrap of paper and started sketching an oversized sewing machine.
That little sketch quickly turned into a quilt design... and eventually into the Oh the Possibilities Quilt Pattern.
The finished pattern features a big, bold sewing machine based off of the Bernina sewing machines. It's a 60" × 60" throw quilt designed for the confident beginner and uses half rectangle triangles, flying geese, and stitch-and-flip piecing.
Years later, seeing that same sewing machine quilt reimagined with Ruby Star Society fabrics covered in the tools we use to sew felt like a fun little full-circle moment.
Here's a little look at the original Oh the Possibilities Quilt, made with the Tula Pink Homemade collection.

Meet the 1-800-Notion Version
For this version, Oh the Possibilities gets a completely different personality.
The sewing machine combines turquoise Thread Charms with Soft Black Buttons, while pops of Goldenrod, Goldfish, Flamingo, and Deep Verdant bring out all those smaller machine details.
And then there's that background.
Stork Scissors. Everywhere.
I mean... could there be a more appropriate backdrop for an oversized sewing machine?
The majority of this version uses prints from 1-800-Notion, along with two coordinating Ruby Star Society Speckled fabrics. I love how those two Speckled solids-ish prints give your eye a couple of places to rest while still keeping all the texture and personality of the collection.

Spotted in the 1-800-Notion Lookbook
One of the especially exciting parts of seeing this version come together was finding Oh the Possibilities included in the official 1-800-Notion lookbook from Ruby Star Society and Moda Fabrics.
The lookbook gives quilt shops a peek at the complete collection along with projects that pair with the fabrics... including Oh the Possibilities.
