Personalized Project Bags... featuring FPP Patterns

Gift making season is the perfect excuse to play with color, mix patterns, and sneak in a little extra personality. This year, I made a set of Project Bags 2.0 by ByAnnie for my niece, a creative preteen with a love of all things crafty. These weren’t just any project bags, I wanted them to be bold, colorful, and full of fun surprises.

Adding a Personal Touch with FPP Details

To make these bags extra special, I added a few foundation paper pieced (FPP) designs to the front and back panels.

For the large bag, I used three mini patterns by Quilty Pie Handmade; Rainbow and Heart, 5 Point Star Block, and Tiny Heart Block. The star and heart were scaled down to 50% to fit perfectly across the bottom border.

On the back, I pieced the Simple Celestial 12" Block by From Blank Pages, a dreamy design that added just the right amount of boldness.

Letters, Love, and Little Surprises

Inside the smaller bag, I added my niece’s initials using the My ABC’s pattern by From Blank Pages. It’s a tiny, personalized detail that transforms an everyday bag into a gift that feels truly hers.

A Bright Mix of Dots, Solids, and Stripes

For fabrics, I pulled together a vibrant mix from Riley Blake Designs basics; Dapple Dot in Black, Swiss Dot on White Black, a playful 1/8" Black and White Stripe, and Confetti Cottons in Riley Fuchsia, Riley Raspberry, Bubblegum, Passion, Papaya, Citron, Riley Teal, and Poolside. The combination of graphic dots, bold solids, and a little stripe accent gave the bags that modern, playful look I love most.

Modern Color Meets Meaningful Making

Whether you’re making a set of bags for a young maker or just adding some handmade charm to your own storage, this project is a fun way to mix color, practice FPP, and create something useful.

I can't wait to see my niece’s face light up when she opens them this Christmas. I can already picture it and hear her sweet "ahh" and "ohh" expressions.
