Sweet Columbine Quilt Pattern... the cover quilt
I am so excited to be sharing my newest quilt pattern that I am completely OBSESSED with.
For over a year I’ve been planning out and designing this striking quilt pattern that means so much to me. The design was inspired by one of my favorite wildflowers, the Columbine, which is a stunner of a flower. More details about my inspiration in a moment…
But first, let me introduce the Sweet Columbine Quilt Pattern. Hopefully a stunner in its own right!
For this Sweet Columbine quilt, I chose to use Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons. These solid fabrics made selecting the colors I wanted a breeze. A fun fact about the Columbine flowers is they can cross pollinate between the different colored plants to create unique colored flowers.
Even though the Columbine flowers come in a variety of colors, including shades of blue, purple, pink, yellow, and white. I made a unique variation based off of some of my favorite colors.
So I selected 7 colors from the Confetti Cotton solids to make a fun and cheery palette much like the flowers themselves.
Here’s all the details about the fabrics used on this Sweet Columbine quilt.
Inspiration
Over a couple of decades ago I fell in love with the Columbine flower. Known for its intricate petals and vibrant colors. The Columbine flower served as a wonderful muse for this quilt design.
The Columbine flower, also known as Aquilegia, which is derived from the Latin word for eagle. Describes their distinctive spurred petals that resemble the shape of an eagle's talons.
These flowers are not only visually stunning, but they also hold symbolic meanings of love, courage, and beauty for their unique shape and delicate appearance.
Overall the Columbine flower is a stunning plant.
Design
My goal was to design a quilt as dynamic and visually interesting as the flower itself. I went through several different layouts and phases before selecting this final design.
I wanted the design to resemble both the bell shaped petals at the tops of the flowers as well as the backward pointing spurs.
I hope I was able to capture the essence of the Columbine flower in the Sweet Columbine quilt pattern.
Quilt Details
The Sweet Columbine quilt pattern is skilled for an intermediate quilter. As the pattern involves the stitch and flip method, 1" finished pieces, on-point blocks, sashing, as well as working with bias edges for the outer half blocks. The quilt finishes at a large throw size at 68x68”.
