Create Joy Quilt... featuring Gingham

Have you ever sewn with gingham fabric? I believe gingham falls into the same category as polka dots and stripes. They can be classic, traditional or modern depending on their colors, scale and usage. The weaving of colored stripes creates a visual that is pleasing to the eye. They are fabrics that transcend trends and time.

Hey there, it’s Kelly Renay here and I am elated that I get to share my latest project with you using the newly released Gingham basics. Riley Blake Designs has had 1/8” Gingham fabric for a while, but with the addition of 13 new colors, there is now a fabulous array of 20 beautiful Gingham colors to choose from. Plus, an even smaller Micro Gingham at 1/16” was introduced in 13 wonderful colors too.

When I first saw these awesome Gingham fabrics, I got a little nostalgia for a moment, for some reason, and thought about coloring time in Elementary School. This little break in the day of learning was a favorite of mine.

So, I decided to take a classic coloring tool to design a modern quilt pattern using the Gingham fabric. I designed a playfully classic dual-ended coloring pencil quilt pattern, named Create Joy.

The Create Joy Quilt features 12 dual-ended coloring pencils, which requires 24 different fabric colors. When selecting the Gingham fabrics, I wanted a balance of both sizes (1/16” and 1/8”), so I picked 12 colors from both.

In addition to the Ginghams, I selected their corresponding Confetti Cotton solids to use for the pencils lead and body accent color. This colorization does differ from the Create Joy Quilt Pattern fabric requirements. Instead of using [Fabric B] the pencil body accent for all colored pencils, you will need a fat-eighth for each pencil half in the corresponding Confetti Cotton solid.
