First Bloom Quilt... the cover quilt
The First Bloom Quilt Pattern is now available! PDF Pattern or Paper Pattern
I'm beyond excited to be sharing with you today my newest quilt pattern, First Bloom. I was inspired by my favorite season, Spring, when all the pretty flower are starting to bud, bloom and blossom.
My favorite flower is the Golden Columbine, "Aquilegia chrysantha". Since you can't find fabric with the Columbine flower, I looked for that wonderful golden yellow.
Then, I remembered this pretty yellow floral that Bonnie Christine had designed. It was prefect!
It wasn't hard to pair fabric with that sweet yellow floral, because I loved so many of the pieces from, Bonnie Christine's: Wonderful Things collection for Art Gallery Fabrics, the classic daisies, to the pink peony like flowers, to the simple graphic of black and white dashes.
Once the fabric was selected it was time to cut. The First Bloom quilt pattern uses traditional piecing of squares, half-square triangles and 3 patch quarter square triangles. Ready to start piecing!
The pattern starts out with piecing together the half-square triangles and the 3 patch quarter square triangles. When it came time for me the trim, I used this handy rotating cutting mat. I got mine from the Fat Quarter Shop. They have a few options to pick from, but I went with the smaller pink one by Sue Daley Designs. It is a real time safer! No more flipping and flopping the fabric pieces around.
After trimming those half-square triangle units, piecing together this First Bloom quilt goes really fast. It makes for a great beginner pattern and requires basic quilting knowledge and the use of a 1/4" seam allowance.
