Dashing Duo Quilt... featuring Frank and Friends

I have a soft spot for Halloween quilts that feel more sweet than spooky, and this one makes me grin every time I see that little mummy popping in to say boo.

This Dashing Duo lap quilt finishes at 41” x 45.5” and was made with the playful Frank and Friends collection from Riley Blake Designs. The mix of pumpkins, ghosts, haunted houses, spiderwebs, and those harlequin prints had me at hello.

And those minty greens tucked in with the oranges and grays? So good.

Layer Cake Friendly… with a Little Fussy-Cut Detour

The lap size in the Dashing Duo Quilt Pattern is layer cake friendly and uses one 10” stack, which makes it a fun stash-friendly project.

For this sample though, I used yardage instead, because I couldn’t resist fussy cutting those character prints and haunted houses. Some fabrics just beg to be played with a little more than others.

Fabric with Halloween-themed houses, a rotary cutter, and a ruler on a cutting mat.

Spiderweb-Inspired Quilting

After piecing the top, I pin basted and quilted it on my domestic machine using a clamshell stitch.

The curves reminded me of spiderwebs, which felt like the perfect echo of the prints.

I quilted it with Glide 40wt in Pistachio, and I’m still smitten with that thread choice. It picks up the soft green in the collection so beautifully and adds texture without competing.

Sometimes the quilting is the quiet hero.

The Mummy Had Other Plans

Now let’s talk about the mummy, because he decided not to follow directions.

The Frank and Friends collection includes a mummy panel meant to be made as a stuffed softie, but while making this quilt I had the idea to attach him onto the quilt instead, like he’s popping in to say hello… or jumping in to give a friendly little fright.

Heavy emphasis on little. He’s a very polite mummy.

Rather than stuffing him traditionally, I made him the same way but added a layer of batting inside. After turning him right side out, I quilted him onto the already quilted quilt top.

That extra batting gives him a bit of puff and dimension, which makes him feel even more animated.

I quilted along the edges and stitched over the black line details for definition.

And because I used the gray main character print for the backing, I switched to black thread on top and gray in the bobbin while quilting the mummy so everything would look clean on both front and back.

Honestly, he may steal the whole show.

A Little Family Memory Stitched In

He also makes me smile because he reminds me of my brother.

One Halloween he needed a last-minute costume, so my parents wrapped toilet paper all over him and sent him off as a mummy.

Classic sibling memory, watching him walk around the neighborhood with his toilet paper falling off of him.

I love when a quilt picks up those unexpected personal stories.

See It in Person

If you’re near San Antonio, Sew Special Quilts will be hanging this quilt for display, so stop by and take a peek in person.

The clamshell quilting and the dimension on the mummy are especially fun to see up close.
