First Bloom Quilt... meets Happy Haven

How revisiting one of my earliest quilt patterns sparked a fresh new idea.

Have you ever pulled out an older quilt pattern and wondered what it might look like with a completely different fabric collection?

That's exactly where this project began.

First Bloom was the seventh quilt pattern I designed. Since then, I've released twenty-one more patterns, and like most designers, I've learned something from every single one. If you're new to First Bloom, you can find the pattern here.

Every new pattern has shaped the way I think about color, fabric placement, and giving quilters creative ways to make a design their own.

Lately, I found myself wondering...

What would happen if I revisited First Bloom?

Not to redesign it. I still love the construction just as it is. Instead, I wanted to see what would happen if I expanded the color possibilities.

A New Way to Look at First Bloom

The original First Bloom Quilt Pattern uses four fabrics to create its bold, blooming design.

For this version, I experimented with using fourteen fabrics instead.

The construction stayed exactly the same, but I separated the design elements into individual fabrics, allowing each print to have its own moment to shine.

It was such a fun creative exercise.

Almost immediately, I began imagining all the possibilities. Bold solids. Graphic black and whites. Cheerful novelty prints. Signature rainbow palettes. The more I played with the idea, the more excited I became about where it could lead.

If everything goes according to plan, I'd love to update First Bloom next year to include both the Four-Fabric Version and this new Multi-Fabric Version, giving quilters even more opportunities to make the design uniquely their own.

Happy Haven Was the Perfect Choice

When it came time to test this new idea, Happy Haven by Shawn Wallace for Riley Blake Designs felt like the perfect match.

The collection is filled with cheerful summertime prints that immediately transported me back to childhood family vacations.

Growing up, summer meant annual trips with our extended family to the Frio River or the Gulf of Mexico. Days were spent swimming, floating the river, or simply enjoying time together before heading back to the cabin where my dad and uncle were usually tending the grill.

Inside, my mom and aunts were busy getting everything ready while the rest of us tried our best to keep the flies away from the picnic table.

One meal I always looked forward to was fajita pinwheels from the dearly missed Bolner's Meat Market alongside Kiolbassa sausage wrapped in a tortilla... what my grandfather always called a taco polaco.

It's funny how a fabric collection can bring back memories like that.

Happy Haven doesn't just remind me of summer. It reminds me of my summers.

Why I Love This Version

One of the things I enjoy most about quilting is seeing how fabric choices can completely transform the same pattern.

Even though the construction hasn't changed, this version feels entirely different from the original.

The playful prints add personality.

The extra fabrics create more movement.

And every block invites you to slow down and discover another little detail.

That's the magic of fabric selection. The same pattern can tell an entirely new story simply by changing what's stitched into it.

Looking Ahead

This little experiment reminded me why I enjoy revisiting older designs from time to time.

Sometimes the pattern doesn't need to change at all.

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh collection of fabrics, a little curiosity, and the willingness to ask, "What if?"

I'm looking forward to exploring this new direction even more... and I have a feeling First Bloom is only the beginning.

If First Bloom has found its way onto your "someday" list, I hope this Happy Haven version inspires you to pull a favorite fabric collection from your stash and make it your own. Whether you choose the original Four-Fabric Version or, hopefully in the future, the Multi-Fabric Version, I'd love to see where your creativity takes it.
