New... Supercolossal Quilt Pattern

A Modern Take on a Timeless Pineapple Block

Colorful quilt with concentric circle pattern in rainbow colors.

Have you ever looked at a traditional quilt block and wondered, "What would happen if I made it...really big?"

That's exactly how Supercolossal began.

I've always loved the traditional pineapple block. There's something so satisfying about watching those strips build outward from the center. Most pineapple blocks are much smaller, though, and they're often foundation paper pieced.

One day I started wondering what it would look like if I skipped the paper piecing altogether and simply made the block... bigger. Much bigger.

I wanted to keep the charm of the traditional pineapple block while giving it a bold, modern twist. After plenty of sketching, experimenting, and sewing, that little "what if" eventually grew into Supercolossal.

Inspired by a Classic

Some quilt blocks never go out of style, and the pineapple block is definitely one of them. It's bold, geometric, and full of movement.

Instead of piecing lots of smaller blocks together, I wanted to celebrate a single oversized pineapple block. Enlarging the design gives every strip and angle room to shine, creating a quilt that's simple in layout but full of visual impact.

Although the finished quilt measures 32" square, the name Supercolossal isn't really about the quilt size. It's about taking a familiar block and seeing it in a whole new way.

Traditional Piecing, One Round at a Time

As excited as I was about the oversized block, I also wanted the construction to feel approachable.

Rather than using foundation paper piecing, Supercolossal is traditionally pieced using techniques many quilters already know. The quilt grows one round at a time, and watching the pineapple slowly come to life is incredibly rewarding.

The pattern is designed for confident beginners, is fat-eighth friendly, and includes instructions for both a Two-Tone Version and a Multi-Fabric Version.

If you're already imagining your own version of Supercolossal, you can shop the pattern here. I'd love to see where your fabric choices take this oversized pineapple block!

The Cover Quilt

When it came time to make the cover quilt, I knew exactly what I wanted.

I wanted the oversized pineapple block to be the first thing people noticed.

Pairing crisp black-and-white Dapple Dots with sixteen Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cotton solids created the bold contrast I had been imagining from the beginning.

The rainbow palette naturally guides your eye around the quilt while adding cheerful pops of color. At the same time, the black-and-white background keeps everything feeling clean, graphic, and balanced.

Two Ways to Create Supercolossal

One thing I had a lot of fun exploring while designing this pattern was how different it could look with just a simple fabric change.

The pattern includes instructions for both a Two-Tone Version, like the cover quilt, and a Multi-Fabric Version, where the background is pieced from individual fat-eighths instead of larger cuts.

Inside the pattern you'll also find a second sample quilt made with Riley Blake Designs' Blackout collection. Both quilts use the exact same colorful pineapple palette, yet they have completely different personalities.

Isn't that one of the best parts of quilting? A different fabric pull can completely transform the same pattern into something that feels entirely new.

Looking Ahead...

If you've been following my quilting journey for a while, you probably know I rarely stop at just one version of a quilt.

I already have ideas swirling around for Supercolossal. Bright solids, cheerful novelty prints, and future fabric collections are all on my list to explore.

That's one of the things I love most about quilt design. The pattern may stay the same, but every new fabric pull tells a different story. I can't wait to see where Supercolossal goes next... and I hope you'll enjoy following along.
